The Dark Peak area of the Peak District is characterised by its huge expanses of peat bog. As well as acting a a massive sponge and carbon sink they are also the exclusive home of England's mountain hares. Whereas in the north of Scotland where snowfall is an annual occurrence, the same conditions do not always prevail in the south leaving the hare to stand out in their white pelage against the dark brown peat.
