Ptarmigan in Snowfield

Cairngorms National Park

Collection: A World In White

Ptarmigan are mountain specialists living off heather that, in winter, can be buried beneath several inches of snow. Turning white in winter, their plumage offers them exceptional camouflage with often only the black of their beaks or, in the case of the males, the red of their eyebrows giving them away.
